Best Movies of the 70's (Taschen 25)

The 1970s: that magical era betwixt the swinging 60s and the decadent 80s, the epoch of leisure suits and Afros, the age of disco music and platform shoes. As war raged on in Vietnam and the cold war continued to escalate, Hollywood began to heat up, recovering from its commercial crisis with box-office successes such as "Star Wars", "Jaws, "The Exorcist", and "The Godfather". Thanks to directors like Spielberg and Lucas, American cinema gave birth to a new phenomenon: the blockbuster. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, while the Nouvelle Vague died out in France, its influence extended to Germany, where the New German Cinema of Fassbinder, Wenders, and Herzog had its heyday. The sexual revolution made its way to the silver screen (cautiously in the US, more freely in Europe) most notably in Bertolucci's steamy, scandalous "Last Tango in Paris". Amidst all this came a wave of nostalgic films ("The Sting", "American Graffiti") and Vietnam pictures ("Apocalypse Now", "The Deer Hunter"), the rise of the anti-hero (Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman), and the prestigious short-lived genre, blaxploitation. The A-Z film entries include: synopsis; film stills and production photos; cast/crew listings; box office figures; trivia; useful information on technical stuff; actor and director bios; and a complete Academy Awards list for the decade.

From Wikipedia;

Christa Paffgen (October 16, 1938? – July 18, 1988) was a German singer-songwriter, fashion model, actress, keyboard player and a Warhol Superstar, best known by her pseudonym Nico.

As a musician, she is remembered for both her time in The Velvet Underground and her solo work.

Nico made her early fame as a model. After leaving school at 13, she started selling lingerie and soon was spotted by fashion insiders. A year later, her mother found her work as a model in Berlin.

While on a modeling assignment in Ibiza, she met the photographer Herbert Tobias, who christened her "Nico" after his ex-boyfriend, filmmaker Nico Papatakis. She soon moved to Paris and worked for Vogue, Tempo, Vie Nuove, Mascotte Spettacolo, Camera, Elle, and other fashion magazines in the late 1950s.

She also claimed to have been briefly hired by Coco Chanel. Despite having dropped out of school at an early age, Nico eventually became fluent in English, Italian, Spanish, and French.

After appearing in several television commercials, Nico landed a small role in Alberto Lattuada's film La Tempesta (1958), and then appeared in Rudolph Mate's For the First Time with Mario Lanza later that year.

In 1959, she was invited to the set of Federico Fellini's La dolce vita and attracted the attention of the acclaimed director, who gave her a minor role in the film. By this time, she had moved to New York to take acting classes under the guidance of Lee Strasberg.

After splitting her time between New York and Paris, she landed the lead role in Jacques Poitrenaud's Strip-Tease (1963). She recorded the title track, which was produced by Serge Gainsbourg but not released until 2001, when it was included on CD as part of the French compilation Le Cinema de Serge Gainsbourg.

During this period she gave birth to a son, Ari (born 1962), who was fathered by French actor Alain Delon. Although the child was raised mostly by Delon's parents, Delon always denied his paternity.

In 1965, Nico met The Rolling Stones' founder and guitarist, Brian Jones, and recorded her first single, "I'm Not Sayin'" for Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label.

Actor Ben Carruthers introduced her to Bob Dylan in Paris that summer. It is said that Dylan wrote the song "I'll Keep It With Mine" for her shortly afterwards.

After being introduced by Bob Dylan, she began working with Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey on their experimental films, including Chelsea Girls, The Closet, Sunset, and Imitation of Christ.

While appearing in Warhol's films, Nico was introduced to The Velvet Underground, at that time the backup group for Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a multimedia performance featuring film, music, lights and dancers. She soon began to work with the Velvet Underground, singing lead vocals on three songs ("Femme Fatale", "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "I'll Be Your Mirror") and backing vocals on another ("Sunday Morning") on their debut LP, The Velvet Underground and Nico.

Released in 1967, the album became influential and lauded within rock music and art circles. Nico had a short-lived romantic relationship with the main singer and songwriter, Lou Reed. Around this era, she was also romantically involved with prominent musicians including John Cale (also from The Velvet Underground), Jim Morrison of The Doors, Jackson Browne, Brian Jones, Tim Buckley and Iggy Pop.

Shortly after the Exploding Plastic Inevitable tour drew to a close in early 1967, Nico and The Velvet Underground parted ways. The exact reasons for her departure have not been made public, though both Reed and former Velvet Underground bassist John Cale pla

Stand By Me - Blessings of Tragedy - Featuring Columbine Survivor Emily Wyant

On April 20, 1999, when the Columbine shooting occurred, my neighbor was a peer counselor at Columbine High School. Many of the students in the library that day were her students. Since I was a native of Littleton, I had many personal connections to others who were in the library as well. I became the safe place for my neighbor to share her thoughts in the aftermath of the shootings, because I had years of trauma and grief training.

The part of this story that breaks my heart is the knowledge that the young adults already traumatized in the shooting in the library, now have to live everyday with the knowledge that the media story of what happened is not true. How many of them were silenced with shame and guilt and were told not to tell their stories? They lived with the horror and then they were forced to live a lie. The community that they needed to trust and the truth they needed to find eluded them.

Even though Emily and I have been friends for five years now, it was not until this interview that we each made discoveries about this horrendous experience that neither one of us knew before. I did not know that she was alone under the table with Cassie. I never knew that she had been interviewed by the Rocky Mountain News. We both found out the article we had each had input on, was never published. She did not know that Eric was the one who shot Cassie. We both read excerpts from Columbine for this interview. The book is chilling, but we found answers to many of our questions within it.

New edition includes Emily Wyant, Greg Sampier, and Tomeika Herbert.

Excerpts:

Emily Wyant – Columbine Survivor

Emily was then saved by a Guardian Angel….as when Eric Harris shot Cassie, the gun came back at his face, he was off balance and it hit him in the nose …breaking it. Blood started pouring out of it. He turned his attention away from Emily hiding under the table. He walked away from the table….leaving Emily in shock and terrified beyond her control.

Greg Sampier - How do you Survive the Worst Day of Your Life?

As a Pastor and police officer, and as an Insurance agent for 35 years Greg had seen many people on the worst day of their life. October 7, 2007 he had the worst day of his life. Karen his wife had complained the day before of her knee hurting. She called Greg from her office asking him to come and get her....she was feeling very ill. He drove directly there. When he found her she was not breathing. A blood clot from her leg had made it to her lungs....
